Lots of Oil under Engine
18th of September 2013 ... Number of Responses 1 --
What would cause lots of oil to suddenly appear under my engine. My car is a Ford Taurus and I was driving on a country road when I hit a rock.

You probably put a hole in the oil pan when you hit a rock. The Oil pan contains the oil for the engine. Off road cars have a metal plate to prevent this from being damaged but your Ford Taurus would not have that

Major oil leaks under an engine usually come from the oil pan. A loose oil pan drain plug, loose bolts on the oil pan itself can all lead to this in addition to the previously mentioned hole in the oil pan. Another failure that can lead to lots of oil can be an improperly tightened Oil filter. If the Oil Filter is not tightened properly then oil will escape rapidly. Oil Pressure sensors can fail causing oil to escape under pressure. If there is lots of oil over the top of the engine, then the valve covers, oil filler cap etc.. start to look like the cause.
